No Is All You Need

The best thing you can get to your request (or audition, proposal, interview, etc.) is YES.

The second best thing you can get is a NO.

Why?

Because now you can close the loop and move on.

You don’t need to look for a reason. You won’t get a satisfying one anyway. It’s a waste of time.

No is all you need.

  1. In Lady Windermere’s Fan Oscar Wilde famously opined: In this world there are only two tragedies. One is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it.” But there is a follow up “The last is much the worst, the last is a real tragedy!” Oscar’s wit aside, if someone is inclined to reject you, a yes from that person would be much worse than a no. If some is inclined in your favor, why would they even consider a no? Accepting a no as good news is easier said than done. But accepting a yes from a wrong person is mistaking bad news for good. Reminds me of a joke attributed to Patrick Murray. “I was unlucky in both of my marriages. My first wife left me. And the second one didn’t.”
